SIE Plan

SIE exam cost: $100, and what it does and does not buy

Short answer

FINRA publishes the SIE fee directly: $100. You pay it yourself, because association with a firm is not required to take the exam, and you can enrol without a sponsor. Veterans who qualify for the GI Bill may be able to claim reimbursement. A pass is valid for four years, which is the part of the price worth thinking about.

The fee

$100. FINRA states it in the At A Glance block on its own SIE exam page, alongside the 75 questions, the 1 hour 45 minute limit and the passing score of 70.

Unlike most of the exams in this portfolio, there is no sponsoring firm to bill. The SIE is open to anyone aged 18 or older and association with a firm is not required, so individuals enrol and pay themselves — by credit card or ACH, or by redeeming a voucher.

Reimbursement for veterans

Veterans who qualify for the GI Bill may be able to receive reimbursement for the cost of taking the SIE. FINRA points to the US Department of Veterans Affairs page on eligible licensing and certification tests. Check eligibility there before paying, not after.

What the $100 actually buys

A four-year result. FINRA states that SIE results are valid for four years, and that window is the real value of the fee: you can pass the SIE now, without a job in the industry, and pair it with a qualification exam whenever a member firm associates with you.

What it does not buy is the ability to do securities business. FINRA is explicit that passing the SIE alone does not qualify an individual for registration or to engage in securities business. The qualification exam that follows — Series 6, 7, 22, 57, 79, 82, 86 and 87, or 99 — is a separate exam with a separate fee, and you must be associated with a member firm to take it.

Retakes

FINRA publishes its own waiting-period and retake policy for qualification examinations. This site does not restate it, because it is set by FINRA and changes independently of the fee. Check the current policy on FINRA's site before assuming a date for a second attempt.

A practical note on enrolling

From FINRA's own page, and it is not a joke: "For the best experience, please use a Windows laptop or desktop. Users have reported issues enrolling on Mac, mobile and tablet devices." Budget for the annoyance, not just the $100.
