Built on the 2025 FINRA content outline

Section weights and item counts come from the Securities Industry Essentials Examination Content Outline, copyright 2025 FINRA. The four sections are Knowledge of Capital Markets at 12 items, Understanding Products and Their Risks at 33, Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities at 23, and Overview of the Regulatory Framework at 7.

Every candidate sits 80 items, not 75

The exam is described as 75 questions, and 75 is the number that counts. FINRA's content outline adds that each candidate's exam includes 5 additional unidentified pretest items distributed at random, so the real total is 80 items in 1 hour and 45 minutes. There is no penalty for guessing, so no item should be left blank.

Passing the SIE does not let you transact business

FINRA states that passing the SIE alone does not qualify an individual for registration with a member firm or to engage in securities business. Registration requires the SIE and a qualification exam appropriate to the work, and an individual must be associated with a member firm to take that qualification exam. SIE results are valid for four years.
