Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam
The SIE is a 75-item multiple-choice exam, but every candidate actually sits 80 items: five unidentified pretest questions are distributed at random and do not count. You get 1 hour and 45 minutes, the passing score is 70, and the fee is $100. Anyone aged 18 or over may take it without being associated with a firm, and a pass is valid for four years.
Content outline and weights
Passing: The passing score is 70. Candidate scores are placed on a common scale by equating, which adjusts for the slight differences in difficulty between the sets of items candidates receive, so the standard is the same whichever form you sit. Passing the SIE alone does not qualify you to register or transact securities business. (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA))
Format
- 75 scored items, multiple choice, four answer choices each.
- 5 additional unidentified pretest items, distributed at random through the exam. They do not contribute to your score and you cannot tell which they are.
- So you answer 80 items in total, in 1 hour and 45 minutes — about 79 seconds per item if you spread the time evenly.
- No penalty for guessing. FINRA says so directly in the content outline, which means leaving an item blank is strictly worse than answering it.
- Delivered at a Prometric test centre or online.
The four sections
| Section | Share | Scored items |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Knowledge of Capital Markets | 16% | 12 |
| 2. Understanding Products and Their Risks | 44% | 33 |
| 3. Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities | 31% | 23 |
| 4. Overview of the Regulatory Framework | 9% | 7 |
| Total | 100% | 75 |
Section 2 alone is 44 percent of the exam. Sections 2 and 3 together are 75 percent — 56 of the 75 scored items. A study schedule that gives equal time to all four sections is spending a quarter of its effort on seven questions, which are nine percent of the exam.
Scoring
The passing score is 70. FINRA places all candidate scores on a common scale by equating, a statistical adjustment for the slight differences in difficulty between the sets of items different candidates receive. The practical meaning is that the standard is identical whichever form you sit, so there is no such thing as an easier exam day.
Who can take it
Unusually among the exams in this portfolio, there are almost no barriers. The SIE is open to anyone aged 18 or older, including students. Association with a firm is not required.
The catch is what a pass does and does not do. FINRA is explicit: "Passing the SIE alone does not qualify an individual for registration with a FINRA member firm or to engage in securities business." To register you must pass the SIE and a qualification exam appropriate to the business you will do — and you must be associated with a member firm to take that second exam.
Results are valid for four years.
Cost
$100, per FINRA's own exam page. Veterans who qualify for the GI Bill may be able to claim reimbursement through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Exam guides
- SIE exam cost: $100, and what it does and does not buy
FINRA publishes the SIE fee directly: $100. You pay it yourself, because association with a firm is not required to take the exam, and you can enrol without a sponsor. Veterans who qualify for the GI Bill may be able to claim reimbursement. A pass is valid for four years, which is the part of the price worth thinking about.
- How to prepare for the SIE when 44 percent of it is one section
The SIE's weighting is lopsided enough to plan around. Products and their risks is 33 of the 75 scored items, and trading, accounts and prohibited activities is another 23, so those two sections are 75 percent of the exam between them. The regulatory framework section is seven items. Study time should follow that distribution, not the order of the outline.
- SIE eligibility: 18 or older, no firm required, valid for four years
The SIE has the lightest eligibility requirements of any FINRA exam: you must be 18 or older, and that is all. You do not need a degree, a sponsor or a job in the industry, and association with a member firm is not required. A pass is valid for four years, during which it can be paired with a qualification exam to register.
